Plastic pipe cement, commonly referred to as solvent cement, is a chemical-based liquid used with PVC, ABS, and CPVC pipes and fittings. When applied, the solvent cement changes the makeup of the materials at a molecular level. This causes the pipes or fittings to become soft due to the solvent unraveling the interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of the pipe. Once the pipe has been connected to another pipe or fitting, it is left alone to cure. The two sides form a bond and fuse, creating one strong, leak-proof connection. Pipe cement differs from glue because it creates a permanent bond between pipes and fittings. It cannot be reversed, and the pipes and fittings can not be taken apart once fully cured, unless done so with pipe cutters. Pipe cements are a must-have product for anyone working in the plumbing field.

How to Choose the Right Cement for Your Pipes

When it comes to choosing a plastic pipe cement for your plumbing project, it is important to keep the following in mind: 

• Type of Pipe/Fitting - The pipes you are working with (ABS, CPVC, or PVC) determine which solvent cement you should be using. It is important to check the cement to ensure that it will work with the type of plastic you are working with. For example, PCV cement doesn’t work with CPVC pipes because it is unable to withstand the high temperatures. 
• Cement Colors - Solvent cements are often color-coordinated as a visual identification for buyers. The colors also help plumbers identify pipes that have been cemented together. This makes repairs easier and helps avoid costly mistakes. Primers are often required; for this reason, they are purple so that inspectors can easily see where they have been applied and where they have not.
