Until it goes back where it belongs, whatever room it serves stays cold. The most common chain of events runs like this. Something opens the skirting up, such as wind damage, a delivery driver, a lawnmower, or an animal digging. How to Reattach a Mobile Home Duct the Right Way

Assuming the duct is intact and the failure was at a connection, the sequence to reattach a mobile home duct looks like this.

  1. Clean both connection surfaces. The trunk collar or boot flange and the end of the fallen duct both need to be free of dust, insulation fragments, and old sealant residue. Mastic does not bond to a dirty surface.
  2. Slide the flex duct core over the collar. The inner wire-and-plastic core of the flex duct goes over the metal collar first, pulled up until it seats flush against the base of the collar. This is the pressure connection, not the outer jacket.
  3. Secure the core with a zip tie or draw band. A heavy-duty zip tie pulled tight around the core over the collar holds the air seal. A metal draw band works the same job. Do not rely on the outer jacket to hold the pressure connection.
  4. Seal the joint with mastic. Apply mastic around the joint where the core meets the collar. Mastic stays flexible and holds the seal over time. Do not use duct tape on this joint.
  5. Pull the insulated jacket back over the joint and secure it. The outer insulation and jacket pull back into place, and a second zip tie or draw band goes around the outside to hold the insulation in position.
  6. Strap the duct back to the floor joists. A proper duct strap repair uses metal strapping every few feet to keep the duct off the ground and in position. If the original straps failed, install more of them rather than the same number in the same places.

What proper strapping actually looks like

Metal plumber's strapping, sometimes called strap iron, screwed to the underside of a floor joist and wrapped under the duct so it sits in a supportive cradle.
